Career Opportunity: Program Associate - Youth Policy Initiative
The Boston Foundation, Greater Boston's community foundation, is one of the
oldest and largest community foundations in the nation, with assets of
almost $900 million. In 2007, the Foundation and its donors made more than
$92 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and received gifts of $90
million. The Foundation is made up of some 900 separate charitable funds
established by donors either for the general benefit of the community or for
special purposes.
The Program Associate will coordinate a multi-year initiative called Youth
Policy Initiative, an effort to build the capacity of Boston area youth
organizations and existing networks of organizations to influence public
policy, specifically those policies that improve resources and services for
high-risk youth (i.e. disengaged, truant, out of school individuals in the
16 to 24 age group.) The Program Associate will provide leadership to the
project; coordinate research; convene organizations; develop and implement a
program to provide technical assistance to organizations; and work with
consultants and other Boston Foundation program staff to develop highly
leveraged grant making and other strategies to support program
implementation and the goals of the initiative.
Essential Responsibilities:
. Coordinate an assessment of the public policy capacity of the
high-risk youth field
. Convene organizations and networks that serve youth in order to
further develop the program, coordinate activities across networks, and
implement strategies that build organizations' individual and collective
capacity to influence policy
. Conduct research on grant applicants, nonprofit issues and other
matters pertinent to specific program work
. Coordinate dialogue sessions and utilize baseline research to
identify advocacy issues and strategies to advance program goals
. Work with consultants to provide technical assistance to
organizations and networks
. Assist in the development of a permanent communication
infrastructure for networks (e.g. website)
. Prepare written material on a timely basis, including summaries of
grant proposals, draft correspondence, meeting minutes, reports and
memoranda
. Prepare and proofread written board and evaluation materials
. Serve as a liaison for the Boston Foundation in a variety of
settings
. Other projects and duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
. Bachelor's degree in public policy or related field. Master's
degree preferred.
. Minimum of four years professional work experience with knowledge of
non-profit organizations required
. Proficient computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office products.
Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills a must
. Experience with and understanding of public policy and high-risk
youth issues preferred
. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and analytical skills
. Excellent written and oral communication skills
. Demonstrated skills in planning, organizing and implementing complex
activities
. Strong research, writing, proofreading and basic editing skills
. Ability to coordinate teams and work as part of a team
. Ability to work under the pressure of tight deadlines
. Resourceful and able to work independently
. Mature interpersonal style, ability to interact well with a diverse
range of people
