(1/31/08) Jumpstart

Jumpstart is seeking volunteers to participate in its Readers Program
this Spring. Jumpstart Readers commit to going into a Somerville
classroom once a week for 1.5 hours to spend time with the children.
Readers are trained in dialogic reading, adult-child interactions, and
other useful areas. Applications can be picked up at the Campus
Center Info Booth or the Jumpstart office at 106 Lincoln-Filene Center
on the Academic Quad. We are extending the deadline to February 4 by
5pm, by which time completed applications need to be dropped off

(1/30/08) Jumpstart

With the success of Jumpstart's Readers program last semester we would
like to encourage all of you to take part in this wonderful program
that reaches more children. Jumpstart Readers Program is a volunteer
opportunity with Jumpstart, for those who can not committee to
Jumpstart full-time but are still committed to helping children in
need. Jumpstart Readers is a volunteer opportunity of at least 1.5
hours a week in a local preschool in the Somerville area. We will
offer training to those who are interested, to make your experience as
easy and as interesting as possible. If you are interested in reading
or just playing with kids, we are currently hiring people for the
position. We have applications available at the Jumpstart office, 209
Lincoln Filene, and the Campus Center Info booth. Application will be

Lead Teacher to join our multi-disciplinary team. Our preschool is a
NAEYC accredited half-day program. Position offers opportunities for
developing leadership and administrative skills. This is a 30 hour per

Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education with EEC Lead Teacher

The Academy North, which provides social skills training to children,
consultation to schools, diagnostic intakes, parent education and
support, and a number of other services offers two levels of
clinically-oriented training for MA or Ph.D. internships. These are
year-long internships (September - mid-June) or for the summer (which

Post Doctoral Opening

The University of Maryland's Child Development Lab has an opening for a
Post Doctoral Fellow beginning September, 2008. The person would work on
two longitudinal data sets examining the trajectories of infant
temperament
across childhood and adolescence and factors - within the child, the
family
and child care -- that modify these trajectories. One of the data sets
includes detailed information on day care status of infants and young
children with observations of social behavior in day care in
collaboration
with Professor Deborah Phillips. The Post Doctoral Fellow would work
with
Dr. Fox and Phillips on this data set. Interested candidates should have
familiarity with the general area of developmental psychopathology and
research in child temperament. A background or knowledge of statistical
modeling techniques for longitudinal research is desirable. Interested

(1/7/08) Early childhood research participation opportunity

Doug Clement is internationally known for his work in early childhood
mathematics education. His project here in the Boston Public Schools
is assessing his program titled Building Blocks, a preschool
mathematics program.

Any interested student should apply immediately by contacting Judy
Storeygard at TERC in Cambridge, as described below. An interest in
education and some experience in schools in terms of understanding the
protocols and cultures in large urban school systems would be helpful.

There is some flexibility in this opportunity.Participation on this
project is part time, with the training sessions in February and the
work itself in the spring, during school day hours.

Position Title: Child Assessor

We are in the process of hiring a team of assessors who will
administer child assessments in the Boston Public Schools as part of a
TRIAD/Building Blocks research project sponsored by the Institute of
Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education and conducted
by a group of researchers from the Graduate School of Education at the
University at Buffalo.

Position Description:

• Assessors will conduct one-on-one mathematics assessments of pre-
school children during the period from April 14 to June 6, 2007.
• Each assessor will conduct approximately four assessments per day at
the child's school.
• Assessors will work between 3-5 days a week for 4-6 hours/per day
(minimum – three days per week; maximum – five days per week).
Flexible hours can be built into individual assessor schedules.
• This is a part-time/temporary position.

Education (preferred):

• Masters degree in Education, Psychology or related field; will
consider a BA/BS degree with some credit toward a Masters.
Job Skills:
• Good interpersonal skills and experience with young children are
required.
• Research and/or interviewing skills are desired.
• Experience in the area of child assessment is preferred.

Job Location:

• Assessments will take place in the Boston Public Schools.

Salary:

• Commensurate with experience ($21-25 an hour)

Job Training:

• Assessors must be able to participate in training sessions in
February and March (total of 12 hours), mostly in 3-hour sessions,
during the daytime). Assessors are required to submit at least three
practice videotapes as part of the training.
