Research Grants on African American Marriage and Health

The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation within the
Department of Health and Human Services has contracted Mathematica Policy
Research, Inc. (MPR) to commission a series of research briefs examining the
link between marriage and health in the African American community.

MPR plans to fund up to six proposals at $10,000 per award. Proposals are
due April 30, 2008. Graduate students may apply under the direction of
someone who holds a doctoral degree.

(4/14/08) Job Opportunity at Washington Irving HS

program. This is a 19 hour per week position and the pay is $20 per hour.
The hours are split between my program site at Washington Irving High School
and our Branch, the Vanderbilt located at East 47th between 2nd and 3rd.

> The position is an after school Adult Facilitator position, through
which you would be facilitating a Community Service Learning program and
assisting our site with administrative tasks. This position requires prior
youth work experience, teaching or group facilitation skills; as well as a
comfortable attitude and positive approach to youth developement with teens.
Students in the program at the Vanderbilt site are special needs students-
diagnosed with mental illness, behavioral and mood disorders. Teens at the
Washington Irving site are not specifically special needs- we provide
services to a spectrum of students who may need tutoring, mentorship,
support in groups and a caring, listening ear.

1) Cambridge Family and Children's Services (CFCS). This is one of the
oldest family service agencies in the Boston area, and is located in
Cambridge. Intern would work 15-20 hours per week for semester or year
(prefer year-long); unpaid. Work under supervision of the Mentor & Volunteer
Coordinator (an E-P MA alum), assisting in recruiting, training, and
monitoring mentors and volunteers to work with families; high risk teens
including those who are pregnant and or parenting; and at-risk school age
children, who may be in foster care, or who need guidance and support.
Bilingual abilities highly desirable.

2) Project Solve: Supporting Family Well-Being; Pediatric Division, Boston
Medical Center. Internship for 15 hours a week for one semester or 10 hours
a week for full year; start May 2008 for summer placement or September for
academic year placement 2008-2009. Work on pilot research project aimed at
reducing symptoms of depression in parents of the BMC Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU). Intern implements a problem-solving intervention technique
with clients, as well as conducts interviews for research study. Fluency in
Spanish preferred but not necessary. Intern can participate in both clinical
and research aspects of the project. Related experience desirable. Site
supervisor is an E-P Ph.D. alum.

trip, environmental leadership trips, celebrations).
- Create and manage weekly schedules for approximately 40 teen interns
working in several Aquarium departments and assist with other Visitor
Education scheduling needs.
- Maintain a database for all teen interns and applicants.
- Communicate with Teen Interns' supervisors about issues related to teen
intern job performance.
- Assist Visitor Education to develop and present seasonal training programs
for teens.
- Coordinate and attend recruiting events.
- Track and coordinate communications with teen families to develop positive
relationships that provide support for Teen Intern development. For example:

POSITION TITLE: Director, Community Impact
DIVISION: Community Impact (CI)
REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President - Community Impact
STATUS: Exempt, Full-time

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Work with volunteers, community residents, and staff to further United Way's
mission and increase its investment in community building activities that
focus on preventing problems, strengthening local assets and increasing
neighborhood leadership. Staff volunteer committees which review and make
funding recommendations regarding human service organizations affiliated
and/or partnering with United Way, serving as primary liaison to these
agencies. Build relationships on behalf of United Way with key community
leaders and constituents. Participate in refining and implementing
Community Impact Division priorities, strategies and initiatives to build on
community assets that address needs and barriers. Assist United Way's
efforts to keep abreast of state, community and neighborhood issues.
Represent United Way in statewide and community meetings.

Applicant will be expected to have experience in issues relating to "Healthy
Child Development" (HCD). This term is utilized by United Way to include
the constellation of factors necessary to enable families and communities to
ensure that all children are nurtured and ready to learn when they enter
school. The focus is on children birth through six years.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Healthy Child Development (HCD) Issue Area Knowledge:
a) Assume content leadership role in prioritizing HCD objectives,
strategies and community impact targets as a member of the HCD Team;
b) Participate in implementation of HCD impact area funds distribution
strategies:
. Manage capacity-building and special initiatives for targeted
impact;
. Help analyze and develop funding priorities for each funding cycle.
c) Agency and community relations:
. Develop relationships with United Way-funded agencies;
. Become knowledgeable about components of organizational excellence,
program quality and outcome measurement;
. Facilitate discussions regarding development of HCD community goals
and community agenda;
. Monitor progress in achieving HCD multi-year outcomes and measures;
. Identify gaps in United Way's HCD impact area and initiate new
relationships, strategies or initiatives to address identified needs
(internal/external).
d) Facilitate partnership, stakeholder, volunteer and agency portfolio
management activities;
e) Explore implications of public policy for the HCD impact area and
recommend United Way positions;
f) Work with internal/external resources to help develop and implement
effective volunteer strategies (including working with community partners,
volunteer recruitment, event planning, volunteer training, and program
evaluation) to align with goals of four CI impact areas;
g) Grant management and special cross-organizational initiatives as
assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:
. Bachelors Degree in Early Childhood Education, Human Development,
Human Services or related field required
. Masters Degree preferred
. Five to seven years proven experience and success in Healthy Child
Development, including: experience in early childhood education; public
policy, program development and evaluation, strategic planning and analysis
. Experience in working with low-income communities and other diverse
groups, with the ability to build and sustain productive relationships with
diverse individuals, groups, organizations and communities
. Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing community based
initiatives
. Ability to build consensus, collaborate with and convene multiple
partners in efforts that produce specific deliverables and demonstrable
outcomes
. Ability to meet aggressive deadlines and handle multiple priorities
. Proficiency in attending to detail with ability to organize,
prioritize and effectively contribute within team setting
. Excellent analytical ability and superior problem-solving skills
. Excellent communication, interpersonal, listening, writing and
facilitation skills
. Familiarity with request for proposal (RFP) process preferred.
. Ability to take concepts through project management to completion
with little supervision.
. Knowledge of current early childhood research, local and national
issues and trends preferred
. Familiarity with nonprofit financial management and budget analysis
desirable;
. Basic Microsoft Office skills and experience required.

(4/2/08) Internship - MA or Ph.D.

This paid internship at the Tufts (Medford) Academic Resource Center will be
working on a variety of possible aspects of designing, implementing, and
evaluating support services for Tufts undergraduate and graduate students
who are not reaching their academic potential. The students tend to be first
and second year undergraduates, but also include returning undergraduates
and graduate students up to 50 years old. Students may have a variety of
factors that make them vulnerable in the Tufts academic environment and some
also have documented risk factors (such as having disabilities, coming from
impoverished backgrounds, being a first-generation college student, etc.).
Possible activities include program development, service delivery, program
monitoring, data collection, data entry, and program evaluation. The intern
will work closely with an Eliot-Pearson Ph.D. graduate who will be Assistant
Director of Academic Resources. The opportunity to complete a research study

Time commitment: 20 hours per week
Compensation: $18 per hour
Requirements: Experience working with students with a variety of differences
and/or disabilities. Experience delivering and/or designing support
