Position: Youth Education Coordinator
Organization: Canal Alliance
A non-profit serving the residents of a neighborhood who are mostly
immigrants, speak English as a second language, and deal daily with
issues of employment, education, childcare, and health care. The
Canal Alliance's youth programs for middle school and high school
children are particularly successful and tackle the tough issue of
educational parity.

Details: Full-Time; Two-year position
Job Description: Helping to transform a community.
Working with students from low-income families.
Helping them graduate high school.
Advising them during college applications.
Coaching, advising and mentoring.
Salary: $40,000 per year plus benefits
Additional Info: This position was created and funded initially by
Amy and Seth Barad, Tufts Alumni living in San Rafael. The Alliance
intends to fill this position from the Tufts Class of 2008. The
person currently holding the job, Vanessa Vazquez, graduated from
Tufts in 2006. In creating this position, the Canal Alliance has been
able to increase the capacity of its high school and college
programs, thereby helping more kids go to college and successfully
complete a college education.
One fortunate Tufts student will enjoy a great first job upon
graduation and have additional opportunities for personal growth:
introductions to nonprofit leaders and active citizens plus exposure
to potential nonprofit careers.
Requirements: A desire for social justice. An interest in youth
development and a desire to do challenging, transformative work are
most important. Experience in teaching, advising, coaching,
mentoring, or tutoring would be helpful. Fluency or ability to
converse comfortably in Spanish is a plus.
A willingness to continue the pipeline of Tufts graduates to hold
this position, perform well, and develop as a leader.
